Stawell is located on the
Western Highway approximately 240 km north-west of
Melbourne (the Capital of Victoria, Australia).
It is the western-most part of the Victorian Goldfields, alluvial gold having been discovered there by William McLachlan at
'Pleasant Creek in 1853, and quartz gold, at 'The Reefs', in about 1856.
THE STAWELL HISTORICAL SOCIETY inc. IS LOCATED IN THE PLEASANT CREEK HISTORICAL PRECINCT, 46 LONGFIELD ST ,(WESTERN HWY), STAWELL.
PLEASE NOTE
We are pleased to advise that the Stawell Historical Society Research Centre and Museum are re-opening to visitors and for direct consultation with our Research Team at our usual opening hours of 10am until 4pm Wednesdays and Thursdays. We will continue to practice safe social distancing and hand sanitiser is available at the entrance to the Research Centre.For those unable to attend in person, you can email your research enquiry to our Research Team at stawhist@bigpond.com.We also have available our 2021 Stawell Historical Society Calendar which includes the topic 'SCHOOLS OF STAWELL AND DISTRICT'. This will be of interest to many of you, so pop down and collect a calendar or phone us on 5358 3789 to have one sent to you. Calendars are $5.00 each + postage.We look forward to welcoming you back.
