Have you ever noticed the roof of Swimwear Galore on Dandenong Rd? It used to be a saddlery and it dates from 1895 when it operated under the name of Thomas Burns. In 1918, 17 year old George Mulder started work with Thomas Burns as an apprentice harness and saddle maker. From 1922 George was left to run the business buying out his employer in 1928, from which time the operation began trading as G.V. Mulder. The company was involved in general saddlery including catering for stock work, the equestrian market and the growing racing industry. Horse harness was made for use in horse drawn transport, including for Richmond Brewery and Carlton & United Brewery, dairies and bakeries. Heavy harness was also manufactured for use in agriculture, such as for ploughing. The canvas side of the business was gradually developed during the 1930s initially with horse rugs and then growing into a wide range of canvas products including tents, truck canopies and awnings. During World War II, due to the demands of the war effort, enlarged premises were required and the first stage of the building on this site was constructed adjacent to the Turf Club Hotel (now Dan Murphy's) with the business operating from both premises. War time production for the Defence Forces included saddlery for the mounted troops and pack horses, harness for transport purposes, canteens, gaiters and tents. In the late 1940s and 1950s these premises were extended in a further two stages with the amalgamation of three titles, the building in its current form was completed in 1961. Swimwear Galore moved in around 2010.
