Matthew Flinders


Dromana Historical Society building There are many historical markers commemorating Matthew Flinders.

A memorial (right) is located by the Dromana Historical Museum.

commemorates the
landing in the area by
Captain Matthew Flinders R.N.

on the 27th April, 1802. Appointed Lieutenant in command of the 339 tonne sloop HMSInvestigator he departed Spithead (England) on 18th July 1801 to explore and chart the Southern shores of Terra Australis and to show the British flag to forestall the French. Arriving off the South-West cape of New Holland on the 6th December 1801 and charting the coastline Eastward, Matthew Flinders entered Port Phillip Bay at the end of April, 1802. The Investigator anchored off Dromana from where he ascended Arthurs Seat. His journey ended at The Heads Port Jackson on 8th May 1802. Project funded jointly by Australian Bi-Centennial Authority, Shire of Flinders and Local Community Groups.

The bridge where LaTrobe Parade crosses over the Mornington Peninsula Freeway is named the Matthew Flinders Bridge. The main plaque is located on the north-west corner of the bridge:

Matthew Flinders Cairn

The Matthew Flinders Cairn is located on the upper slopes of Arthurs Seat a short distance below Chapman's Point. There are two plaques on the East side of the cairn as shown below. A third plaque is located on the adjacent stone wall and indicates points which were visible to Flinders during his survey..

Matthew Flinders Monument and Orientation Table Schnapper Point Mornington

Two more historical markers in the form of an imposing monument and an orientation table are located on Schnapper Point Mornington, 18Km NNE of Arthurs Seat. During his short time in Port Phillip Bay, Matthew Flinders travelled to Schnapper Point, then crossed the bay to explore the Western side.

Matthew Flinders Memorial Station Peak

On 1 May 1802 he climbed with three companions to the highest point in the You Yangs from which he surveyed the bay, and which point he named Station Peak. Subsequently, in 1912, this was renamed Flinders Peak and a plaque was placed on the summit to commemorate his ascent of the peak.

Statues of Matthew Flinders can be found in both Sydney and Melbourne.

A statue of Matthew Flinders is situated on the west side of the Mitchell Library, Sydney, facing Macquarie Street. The plaque reads as follows:

A statue of Matthew Flinders is situated on the west side of St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, near the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets. The plaque reads as follows:

John Murray

On 9 March 1802 Acting Lieutenant John Murray Commander H.M.S. Lady Nelson took possession of Port King later named Port Phillip. A plaque commemorates the occasion.

The following plaque can be found on Point King, Sorrento, Victoria. Melways Map Ref. 157 A3.

LATER NAMED PORT PHILLIP, IN THE NAME OF HIS
SACRED MAJESTY GEORGE III OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND
AND HOISTED THE UNION JACK.
THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THE UNION JACK
WAS USED FOR THIS PURPOSE IN AUSTRALIA.

Murray/Bowen Plaque

This plaque is located on the monument on the west side of the Historical Museum, 359A Point Nepean Road, Dromana. It commemorates the entry of John Murray and William Bowen into the bay and also the naming of Arthurs Seat.
