Covering the area from Macs Cove to Matlock, in
the beautiful North Eastern Victorian high country, this region
includes the townships of, Howqua Inlet, Jamieson, Kevington,
Gaffneys Creek and Woods Point, the region with nearby access to
the Goulburn and Howqua arms of Eildon Weir also extends into
the remote Upper Goulburn and Jamieson Valleys.
The Upper Goulburn Tourist Region, is one of the most
picturesque and romantic areas in the state, but also probably
one of the least publicised and most underrated tourist
destinations in Victoria, it is an area of unspoiled, natural
beauty.
Camping, fishing, snow & water skiing, boating, 4x4 touring, deer hunting, gold panning and fossicking, bush walking, horse riding, trail bike riding, canoeing, white water rafting, tennis, swimming, photography, painting, bird watching and exploring historic sites. These are just a few of the year round recreational pursuits this area offers.
SPRING
Spring brings the opening of the trout season
time to fish in any of the excellent fishing spots on the
rivers for both trout and murray cod.
With melting snow swelling the rivers it is also a great time
to go white water rafting or canoeing. For the nature lover,
wildflowers abound, with the glorious colour of the Wattles
and Apple Blossom mingling with the Willows and other
deciduous trees, lining the river banks, with their bright
green spring growth, the perfect time for bushwalking.
SUMMER
Time for swimming and water sport, with our beautiful warm days and cool restful nights. Enjoy a great meal at any of the excellent hotels and restaurants, take a walk around town, get to know the locals.
AUTUMN
The district becomes a canvas painted in red and gold as the Elms, Oaks, Poplars and Japanese Maple, aglow with colour, prepare to shed their leaves. This is the favourite time for artists and photographers alike, with scenery worth capturing which ever way you turn.
WINTER
Trout season closes on the rivers but it is still an excellent time to fish for Trout and Redfin in the weir, or sit around a comfortable log fire after a day in the snow. Just over an hours drive from the snowfields of Mt. Buller and Mt. Sterling the area offers comfortable and reasonably priced off mountain accommodation for the serious skier.
Closer to Jamieson, Mt Skene offers plenty of local sightseeing snow for the less ambitious and offers many opportunities for the cross country skier, an ideal spot to take the kids for their first visit to the snow and it costs you nothing there are no toll gates.
WILD LIFE
The Upper Goulburn is also home to a large range of interesting bird and animal life, among the animals that inhabit this area are: Wombats, Kangaroos & Wallabies, Echidna, Platypus, Ringtail Possums and Sugar Gliders, bird life abounds even in the towns, Finches, Blue Wrens, Honey Eaters, King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas, Galahs, Gang Gangs and Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, out in the bush you may be lucky enough to see the elusive King Fisher and Lyrebird or a flock of Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos, while the weir is home for a large range of water birds from Pelicans to tiny Dab Chicks.
