Here is another example of the dangerous chasm which can be created when old and deep mine shafts collapse from the surface.
This shaft is about 100 feet deep, and was worked with great success in the 1860s and early 1870s when steam-operated machinery was install to deal with heavy influxes of water coming in from the nearby Half Way alluvial lead.
