Richmond's History

Richmond was surveyed by Robert Hoddle into forty-seven blocks of around twenty-five acres.  The first land sales were held on 1 August 1839, but only twelve were offered, soon after the survey had been completed, a serious flood, earlier in the year, had shown the that the blocks leading down to the river were flood prone, so they were withdrawn from sale.
Joseph Docker chose portions twenty-one and twenty-two.
He paid 975 pounds for 50 acres.

This 1870 image shows the area of Docker's purchase running from Church Street to Swan Street, along Richmond Terrace to Bontherambo Street and back to Swan Street.  Docker had plans drawn up to establish 'Clifton Village' after the name of his farm at Richmond NSW.
