History Week 2018

7 - 14 October

 Program: Newstead Historical Society activities
Saturday 6th: As part of the ‘Hedges Open Garden’ program in the district, Lil and Peter Skilbeck’s historic garden ‘Plaistow’ at 324 Rodborough Road, Joyce’s Creek will be open on Saturday October 6th. Garden is open 10 to 5, admission is $5 per person and all proceeds go to the Cancer Council. We thank Lil and Peter for making their garden available on this day. Come and ‘kick’ off History Week with a visit to this lovely old garden. Location: Plaistow’ at 324 Rodborough Road, Joyce’s Creek VIC 3363 (via Creswick)

Sunday 7th: Walk and talk with Ray Stevenson, our local historian.
Meet at the at 1.30pm and visit sites of historical interest on the eastern side of the Loddon River, Newstead. Walk is an easy walk and will take approximately one to one and a half hours. Bring hat and drinks if weather hot. Location: Community Centre (near IGA supermarket) Lyons St. Newstead

Monday 8th: Monday morning October 8th Courthouse, 2 Canrobert St, Newstead will be open, 9.30 to 12.30.Come along meet and see our researchers at work. Never know what you may find out or whom you may find.
If you’ve always wanted to get involved in an historical society this is your chance or maybe you’ve wanted to research your family or local community. This is an opportunity to meet some like-minded people who will be able to answer your questions. Location: The Courthouse, 2 Canrobert St, Newstead

Wednesday 10th: Tour the Newstead Public Cemetery with local historian, Jill Bant.
You may have an ancestor at rest in the cemetery and may wish to share a brief story of their life that would be of interest. Location: Newstead Public Cemetery entrance, Cemetery Road, Newstead

Saturday 13th: Derek Reid will present a talk on researching mines and then you are invited to car pool for a tour of mine sites. Sunday 14th: The old Courthouse, now home of the Newstead & District Historical Society will be open 1pm to 4 pm. A great opportunity to see what happens in an historical society and to meet some passionate local historians. And to see close-up how grass-roots heritage operates in preserving buildings, manuscripts, images, maps, objects – all the important things which tell our story.
In sync with History week pupils from the Primary school will be encouraged to record oral family histories with their family; they will also join Ray Stevenson in history walks in the town. Location: The Courthouse, 2 Canrobert St, Newstead

MEETINGS

Society meetings are held at the courthouse in Canrobert St. Newstead on the third Monday of each month, February to November


EXCURSIONS

Local excursions are held monthly by members and guests
