WALHALLA - One of the last Gippsland fields to be discovered; Edward STRINGER of Wood's Point finding alluvial deposits in 1861; subsequently rich quartz reefs were found in the hills. Long Tunnel mine opened in 1865, the most productive Victorian mine yielding 815,569 oz. during its 50 years of activity.
