The Melbourne Zen Group has a regular monthly schedule of group zazen (sitting meditation) and zazenkai (longer meditation periods). Occasionally the group will offer a series of talks. Twice a year we organise a sesshin (meditation retreat) of 5-7 days duration. Brief details are given below for time and location of group zazen and zazenkai. Zazen The Group currently practices zazen (sitting meditation) together on Tuesday evenings. The sessions are broken up into 25 minutes blocks of zazen followed by 5 minutes of kinhin (walking meditation). The first sitting period is usually devoted to chanting gatha and sutras (see links page for further details.) Tuesday evening zazen runs from from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Evam Buddhist Institute, 673 Lygon Street, North Carlton. On the first Tuesday of every month, zazen finishes at 8pm to allow time for Dharma discussion. All are welcome to remain after sitting for tea and a chat. Non-members are asked to contribute $2 per session towards rental costs. If you are new to Zen, please contact us to arrange a brief introduction to zazen.
Zazenkai Sadly, as of December 2007, the venue used by the Melbourne Zen Group for Saturday morning group zazen, and for monthly zazenkai, became available. We are currently seeking a suitable replacement venue, and hope to shortly resume these regular activities shortly.
