Dear
Dr. Telemark
I’m keen to go on some of the YHA Nordic trips, but I’m not that interested
in skiing. Would it be OK if I just watched from the carpark? Also you leave
a bit early don’t you? - I like a bit of a sleep in on Sunday mornings,
and don’t get up much before 9.30am - surely we can come to an arrangement?

Dear NS,
If you want to watch from the carpark that’s fine. I think car-parks are
vastly underrated in what they can offer. A few years ago I was all set
to do the Annapurna circuit but couldn't shake off a particularly virulent
dose of Delhi belly. Rather than hold up the rest of the expedition, I
just watched the whole thing from the carpark. Then there was the time
when I went to Southland to catch the latest Barbra Streisand movie but
discovered that I had left my wallet at home. Not a problem, I just watched
the whole thing from the carpark. In fact a lot of people told me afterwards
it was the best place to view it from. So go ahead - watch the world through
a windscreen.
You’ve raised a good point about departure times. Setting off between
6-7am on a day trip can allow up to six hours of skiing, which is a bit
excessive and in fact could threaten to take the group out of sight of
the carpark. Another tip for that extra kip is not to waste time putting
on your gear, just ski in your pyjamas. Provided they’re stripey and brightly
coloured, no-one will notice. Just remember that if the weather is bad,
I suggest wearing a Goretex jacket instead of your dressing gown.
