WARNING - This sport is a highly addictive activity which may cause or result in some seriously good times or even a new lease on life.

What's the deal?

Whitewater kayaking is a fun and exciting way to enjoy the beauty of Victoria's scenic rivers. And for over 20 years, the YHA Canoeing group has offered easy, year-round access to the sport for beginners and experts alike. You don't have to be a member to come along to any events we have organised.

Which end is the front?

New paddlers are invited to join one of our Yarra day trips. All you need to bring is lunch. The club provides all the necessary equipment you'll need, and experienced paddlers will give basic instruction as they guide you down the river. You have a choice of either open, two person canoes or kayaks.

What to expect?

The ugly truth is that at first a kayak feels completely unstable, won't go straight and convinces everyone that they must be the most hopeless case ever.

So what's the incentive?

There's the satisfaction of learning how to transform a "stupid, wobbly boat" into a nimble extension of your body. But it's not just learning to do something tricky. Paddling lets you immerse yourself into the scenic beauty of rivers, and you will discover that rapids aren't just obstacles to overcome. Like a slope for the skier or a wave for the surfer, whitewater is the paddler's opportunity to carve it up.

Ready to learn more?

The club offers pool nights where you can receive instruction in rolling and support strokes. The club also has a two-person kayak that allows an experienced paddler to take a beginner down a river to let them experience the techniques used to paddle white water.

Love a good grade III?

If you already paddle with a club and want to do some extra trips, or you're just having trouble organising your regular paddling mates, you don't need to join the club or be a YHA member to participate in any trip offered.

Life off the river?

We know there's more to life than whitewater. That's why our calendar of events includes social evenings, ski trips, mountain biking, climbing and other special events.
