[ republic hotting up on campuses ] As the referendum draws closer the energy levels are rising at Melbourne's major university campuses.
At Monash Clayton last week (Wed 6th October) a Republican Forum drew a full house. Over 100 students packed the lecture theatre to hear former Victorian Premier John Cain and Felicity Hampel QC, President of the Victorian Council for Civil Liberties, and Deputy Convenor ARM.

Live bands (rumoured to include Loin Groin) and speakers such as Richard Fidler will take to a stage constructed on the Concrete Lawns. Meanwhile a free BBQ and fairground activities such as a "Dunk the Queen" ball throwing competition will add to the celebratory atmosphere.
At 5.30 a debate between prominent republicans and monarchists will be hosted by the Melbourne University Debating Society.
The festival will run from 12.15pm to 2.30pm, followed by the debate. The aim of the day is to celebrate our chance to up date our Head of State to represent modern Australia.
