[ youth speak out at national convention for a republic ] Young people's support for a Republic has increased to 65%, with 30% against, said NewsPoll last week. Young Australians for a Republic, presenting at the National Convention for Republicans, say that they will be tailoring a distinct Yes campaign for youth.
"We will be seeking Federal Government funding as announced yesterday by Daryl Williams, Federal Attorney-General, to present a campaign that reaches as mnay young people as possible from the city to the country and from Oxford Street to Rundle Mall," says Peter Sagar, Victorian delegate of Young Australians for a Republic.
"Young people are interested in the Republic and the values it represents. But young people don't watch the 6 o'clock news. We need to present relevant messages throgh relevant channels," NSW Co-Convenor Ryan Heath says.
Terry MacDonald says,"The Republic is a symbol of the unique, independent and self confident Australia that our generation has taken for granted. We expect a Republic and want a Republic. Young people are republicans, but our mentality is different from that of the aspirign baby boomers. Young people have grown up taking for granted the change in Australia that a Republic seeks to recognise."
Young Australians for a Republic are presenting to the Convention a broad motion for the representation of all groups, including youth people, on a Yes Coalition Committee.
"We are a happy partner in the Yes Coalition because other groups have realised that they need to pat us on the back and not on the head," Heath says.
The motion states:"That the participants of this session are committed to the establishment of a formal Yes Campiagn group. This group will be representative of all groups promoting the Yes vote at this November's referendum, including young people. The mission of this group will be to ensure that the Yes messgae is understood by all potential supporters and ensure that they will vote Yes."
