Comfort Food '09

The Pilot Café is the very first YamDaisy Café set up to see how the plan works in reality.

I have been firming up a structure for the YamDaisy cafe as I look at the issues of each stakeholder.

The needs of the clients: Delicious, everyday food. A community hub they can interact with or not. Flexible around the needs and tastes of the local community. Affordable for everyone who needs it.

The needs of the chef/manager: Reasonable working conditions and income. Support. Clear guidelines that are as flexible as possible.

The needs of the franchise management: Proper funding for governance, research and communication. Able to nurture the health and vibrancy of the franchise.

The needs of the government/society: A healthy, engaged community able to work and pay their taxes, and not run up enormous hospital bills and welfare bills due to ill health! To ensure every child access to nutritious, social eating experiences. To give people support in avoiding, managing or recovering from chronic illnesses.

At the moment the YD Cafe is a dream, but here is how I would like to bring it to reality:

I live in Darebin, (inner NE Melbourne ) and there are areas here where a large number of people would be pensioners or Health Care Card holders, so this would be a good place for a pilot YamDaisy Café.

THE YAMDAISY PILOT CAFE

  • The café could be a corner shop that is vacant, a shop in a small strip of shops in a residential area, or maybe converted from something else.
  • The café would be similar in size and appearance to one of the nice little cafes in the shopping centres around.
  • There won't be many menu choices: a soup dish, two main meals and a fruit dessert.
  • A full meal will cost no more than $10 for registered clients, $5 for soup and a roll.
  • Anyone else can buy food at slightly higher prices.
  • Between 100 and 150 people need to be coming through buying meals. We estimate that we need to seat at least 30 at a time.
  • We need 100 registered clients to start. They would be pensioners and healthcare card holders and live within a kilometre of the café (preferably 500m). the aim would be to have around 300 clients in each YD Cafe area.
  • The café caters to sick people in pain who want to sit quietly on their own and enjoy the meal, and large families who come in to share a meal together.
  • The café has the vibrancy and professional look of a High Street café, but also has aspects of a home kitchen.
  • There will be takeaway.
  • There is going to be a grand opening!
TASTE THE DREAM

YAMDAISY THE REALITY SERIES!

This would work best! A Reality Series made about the first year of two pilot YamDaisy Cafes. There are two so they can compare and contrast. And also to give better data on the structure that will work. They will each be in areas of high need but contrast areas e.g. one with lots of families, or teenagers, or aged pensioners.

The process of choosing chefs and the set up of the franchise to support them. Prominent Chef/Restaurant Managers could be mentors, so the show could see them working out problems with menu, with how they set up, communicating with their clients, developing contacts with food producers etc.

The IT guys (or girls) would be working on the technology that allows the best way to communicate the menus, keep track of special needs, make payment easy, and gather data to show what the health outcomes are.

The Design Students who are looking at state of the art eco friendly sustainability, the way the cafe can foster community contact, and answer the particular needs eg wheelchair accessability, toddlers, zimmer frames...

The artists and gardeners who work on the murals, the nature strip and what to do with the scraps...

The customers... who they are and how the Yamdaisy cafe effects them.

Are you getting the idea! It would be a cool reality series and such a great start to getting YamDaisy Cafes everywhere they are needed!

We all need delicious nourishing food. let's have a system where people who are ill, poor or struggling don't miss out.
