YABBA Timeline

Students from city, suburban and country, primary and secondary schools
have the opportunity to celebrate reading Australian stories and voting for their favorites.

Term 1

Children nominate titles for the short list.

To begin the celebration of Australian story across the State, students are invited to suggest titles to appear on the YABBA Short list. The short list brings together the suggestions of students from the broadest education community to highlight and celebrate the abounding diversity of opinion. This short list is published in poster format, designed by the previous years winner of the Picture Storybook section.

Your participation as a school is encouraged and your active promotion of the YABBA process is appreciated.

(See Nominations page)

Terms 2 & 3

Reading time for the books on the short list.

This statewide celebration of Australian story continues through terms 2 and 3 as students read titles form the YABBA short list and beyond.

Students are able to read book reviews contributed to YABBA's website.

They can also participate throughout the year in other activities suggested via the YABBA newsletter supplied to all financial members.

The YABBA Games Kit has been developed to support schools in planning and implementing activities based around Australian story.

(See Short List page)

Term 4

Voting takes place. (See Voting page)

For a book to win a YABBA it has to be an Australian fiction book, first published within the last ten years, and cannot be a previous YABBA winner. Ballot papers are available in September. Children cast votes for their favourite books in each of the 4 sections. A book does not necessarily have to be on the "short list" to attract votes, as it may not have been published when the short list was formulated. Any book may be voted for, as long as it is eligible and within the rules.

Final day for voting each year is a specified day in October (International Children's Day).

The winners are announced at the award ceremony where the authors and illustrators receive YABBA citations presented by children.

The Awards Ceremony - November.
