hy a website devoted to a master of filmic schlock, you ask? Hmmm, a
good question, I say.
I guess it all started years ago, reading histories of horror movies as a child. I always remembered a picture of John Bloom's ludicrously made-up face as Frankenstein's monster from a film captioned, "Blood of Frankenstein". He was carting off Regina Carroll, Al's main female star and wife, but I didn't know that at the time.
Anyway, that would have stayed in the back of my mind, for most of my adult life if the internet hadn't come along. I discovered online shopping at Amazon.com, and sure enough, one of the cheapest items that came up in my early searches was "Dracula versus Frankenstein". Two and two were put together. Blood of Frankenstein was a non-de-plume for Dracula versus Frankenstein. In my excitement at this host of new filmic opportunities, I thought, "what the Hell!" and had it sent over to Australia. Was I glad I did!
I couldn't believe my eyes. The bizarre modern depictions of the classic monsters. The meaningless speeches that seemed to go on forever. The juxtaposition of dwarves, mad professors, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, dwarves, bikies, Las Vegas showgirls, hippies, it just blew my mind. Having a love for the trash aesthetic, I felt that Al had created a benchmark work in this area.
I needed more.
After months of trawling the net, I finally located "Brain of blood" under the guise of "The Creature's revenge". (Many of Al's films have multiple aliases). In the meantime, I had bought "Schlock-o-rama" by David Konow, a great source of info on ol' Al baby. So in some ways I "knew my stuff". When I finally received Brain of blood, it didn't have quite the craziness of "D. vs. F", but it was a hoot anyway, with witless giants, dwarves (again), arabs, brain transplants - bloody ones, too - and of course, the ubiquitous and voluptous Regina Carroll. What more could a schlock fan want? You can look at my two reviews for these films via my Filmography page, or just click here.
Shamefully, that's the extent of my viewing experience of Al Adamson. I plan on buying or finding more films as time (and mainly, money) permits. But, at least I can share my enthusiasm for what I do know about Mr. Adamson with you, for better or worse.
Have fun!
