In January 2001 the U3A Cluster published an extensive report on a study of its membership: "U3As in Western Victoria - Western Victoria U3A Cluster Research Project Report"

Overview of the report:

The report was the outcome of a major research project conducted for the Western Victoria U3A Cluster in August-December 2000. Western Victoria U3A Cluster research CD

The research data generated detailed information about key aspects of the U3As:

  1. The structure and organisation of the various U3As in the Cluster, their resources, the problems they encounter and how they deal with them.

  2. The demographic makeup of the U3A membership.

  3. The identification of members' expectations of their U3A, their levels of satisfaction with various aspects of their U3A, and their concerns and suggestions for improving their U3A.

  4. U3A members' skills and attitudes regarding the use of new communications technologies.

The principal aims of the research were to gain information which would:

The research process incorporated interviews with representatives of the Management Committees of each of the Cluster U3As, focus group discussions with members of the Cluster U3As, a written survey of 805 members of eight U3As in Western Victoria (including three non-Cluster U3As) and some background research into similar educational organisations for older adults elsewhere.

The project was funded by the Victorian Adult Community and Further Education Board and the research was carried out by Lumsdon Consulting.
