Commodore's Corner

The last few months have been proof that WTYC has been able to get along quite well without its commodore at the helm. While he was enjoying an in depth investigation of the trailer sailer scene in Italy and France, the rest of the members had a series of successful occasions including Easter at Yarrawonga, and the weekend at Hotham. And congratulation to Charles Koning on reaching his 60th birthday without drowning or other untimely demise.

Also during that time, there was the AGM, at which a number of positions changed place. Many thanks to Ron Stembridge for his years as Treasurer, and thanks to David Battern for accepting the position. Also thanks to all the continuing committee members for their continued service to the club.

The Presentation Night was enjoyed by all, and marked a long awaited return home to the Western suburbs after an (admittedly good) period in the wilds of Mordialloc. The evening was remarkable for tall tales, unexpected prizes, and of course the Darrell Reid memorial presentation of awards to the unfortunate.

For the near future, we are past the shortest day and into the winter series, which we will share with TYCV.

Hope to see you at the races, cruises, and social occasions.

John Pruden

CLUB NEWS :

EDITORS COMMENT

Welcome to the late June 99 issue of the Jib Sheets newsletter.

The sailing has finally been good to us since the last newsletter with the 2 winter races having been held with good sized combined fleets, in perfect winter weather, with fresh Northerlies on flat water.

The presentation night was a success with good company and hearty meals, despite the Hotel and the function room being well passed its use by date and Manuel’s (Faulty Towers) relatives serving behind the bar and the world’s slowest Cappuccino machine.

Please keep your contributions coming in and share with us your stories and weekend nautical experiences.

WINTER RACE No 1, Sun 6th June

The scheduled 1st WTYC winter race combined with the TYCV, had a large fleet of over 12 starters. The 7 WTYC entrants enjoyed the fresh Northerly breeze and the flat water as we sailed the course to the mark No 77 at station pier, then down to "B" off St Kilda marina. Lowana V was able to open up a slight lead as the race developed, due to its crew weight. They were followed closely by The Sting, Colduck and Bunyip, who changed positions on each leg.

The winner on handicap was JoJo, with Lowana V, The Sting, Colduck & Bunyip following, with the two castles of Luff MeTender and Viking Express retiring.

CALENDAR QUESTIONNAIRE

Thank you to all those who took the 5 – 10 minutes required to complete the calendar questionnaire. Your response and detailed suggestions and comments from some will hopefully assist in the committee establishing a calendar better suited to members ideas and requests. If those who have forgotten, its not yet too late to send in your thoughts and ideas so the social, cruising or racing program will better suit you.

WINTER RACE No 2, Sun 4th July

The scheduled 2nd WTYC winter race combined with the TYCV, was held on Sunday, the 4th July. The 3 WTYC starters joined the 7 TYCV yachts to give a good sized fleet on what turned out to be another perfect winters sailing day, with a 10 to 15 Knott northerly breeze on flat water.

Bunyip and JoJo each had 3 crew on board and were better suited in the fresh breeze then Colduck, who struggled with a lack of weight, with only 2 crew on board.

Bunyip was able to pull away from JoJo and Colduck, after putting in a reef, was able to handle the lack of weight problem better and began to chase JoJo. On the last leg, JoJo set a shy kite and began to close the gap on Bunyip and pull away from Colduck. Colduck then decided to fly a kite but after one round up, it was quickly agreed that with only 2 on board the water was too cold to risk a swim. Colduck waived goodbye to JoJo, who sailed away to the finish.

In the combined fleet Bunyip was second across the line with JoJo picking up 3rd place on handicap.

The WTYC placings were first JoJo, followed by Bunyip and Colduck.

VIC TRAILABLE CHAMIONSHIPS

The WTYC entered 3 club representative boats in the Vic Trailable Yacht championships held over the weekend of 20th & 21st March at the Geelong Yacht club. Our 3 representatives were Moonshadow, Liason and Lowana V and were crewed by most of the club skippers as well as normal crews. While it wasn’t a successful regatta for the club, it was good to be involved, even if it didn’t stop pouring rain all day Sunday.

The results for our boats were :-

Division 3-

Moonshadow, 11th overall from 19 starters.

Division 2-

Liason, 12th overall from 15 starters.

Division 2-

Lowana V, 13th overall from 15 starters.

Many thanks to the skippers who went to the effort of preparing their boats and making them available to represent the club.
