"The Women's Historical Data Kit is intended as an introduction to the history of the social and political integration of women into Australian society. It should also serve as a valuable ready reference to various events which have occurred in the 'Calendar' of women's struggle and act as a resource document in following up the many significant events, for all those who are interested in learning more about women's history.
The information dealt with in the Kit is restricted mainly to Federal and Victorian data, particularly with reference to legislation.
It does not claim to list all significant dates or names but to act as a guide in the uncovering and recognition of the part that has been played by women and women's organisations in shaping the past and present.
The struggle for equality has been a long and often bitter one and women are still, in economic, social and political terms far from equal in Australian society.
Frequently the part women have played has been treated trivially by the media and the 'powers-that-be', and it becomes important for us to sometimes be able to remind ourselves of how far we have, in fact, come despite ridicule, oppression, violence and ignorance.
We hope it may serve too, as a reminder, when change is needed and our strength fails, that we have done it before and can do it again." Introduction, page 5
