Remember how we worked together in Women's Liberation?

It was definitely no leaders, and a different person co-ordinating at each meeting. No-one could tell anyone else what to do - we were each autonomous and individually responsible for ourselves.

Women still organise that way, of course. Unless I am wrong (someone please tell me if I am) The Revolutionary Association of Women in Afghanistan (RAWA) is an example. Onnie Wilson talks about RAWA in her interview in the 'Stories' section of Women's Web - Women's Stories, Women's Actions http://www.womensweb.com.au

RAWA Supporters also organise RAWA women to come to Victoria to meet us.

Another one is Women in Black Melbourne http://www.womeninblack.org.au/

As I see it, friendship plays an important part in feminist groups. It could be the main organising principle other than commitment to the issue that makes the group an organisation or movement rather than just self-help or charity. Perhaps women come together because of the issue but end up working together more as friends.

At least that is what I think I found out about women's groups in Victoria over the last century when I was compiling Women Working Together suffrage and onwards http://home.vicnet.net.au/~women

It isn't enough, though. There is something important that I am missing, but I don't know what it is. I would love to hear any ideas you have.
