President's Report - February
2009
It does seem a long time since
the last Poleline, but little skiing has taken place over summer. This is
being written toward then end (hopefully) of a long spell of over 40 days,
culminating earlier tonight with a long power failure and the public
transport in unbelievable chaos. Why do we fail to elect governments with
foresight and planning and the ability to build infrastructure before crisis
point?
Whatever is alleged against
solar power it would be at its strongest right when it is needed most. We
have to be careful turning on our solar hot water in this weather in case we
scald ourselves.
The special general meeting in
October attracted many members and the motion to reduce the quorum from 12
to 7 was passed. This will make AGMs less fraught, but I hope many members
will still turn up. There is a good chance I will not be there myself, but
in any case it is time someone else took on the Presidency with fresh ideas
and enthusiasm.
The discussion on how long after
the AGM is a reasonable time to renew membership is largely resolved by my
finding that the constitution provides for 2 months. A change would
therefore need another special resolution.
The weekend at Shoreham was
enjoyed by 4 of us, rain wind and all - made for bracing beach walking and
swimming. The Xmas BBQ was well attended and enjoyed on a beautiful day. The
January lunch at Wellers was also enjoyed on a great day.
Seem to have nothing new to
report on politics as relevant to our activities; I believe the degrading of
the High Plains road is continuing. An all resort season pass is possibly in
the offing - you will need to be doing a lot of skiing to make it
worthwhile.
It is just too hot even after
midnight, so see you at an air-conditioned pub night, at the cool sea of the
Prom and in some cold snow as soon as possible.
Cheers, Loch
