In 1987 the Australian Women's Martial Arts Federation held its first
national training camp in NSW. The camp encouraged women's participation
in the martial arts and allowed for sharing of skills across all grades
and styles.
By 1991 the network of women in martial arts had expanded throughout Australia and WinMA Victoria was formed, followed by Western Australia, South Australia, and recently New South Wales and ACT. There are WinMA members all over Australia. WinMA has members who practice Judo, Jujitsu, Wing Chun, Hapkido, Taekwondo, Karate, Aikido, Ninjutsu, Self Defence, Iaido, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Kickboxing and more. In 1998 WinMA Australia held it's12th national training conference in SA. The organisation continues to grow and attract many enthusiastic and highly skilled female martial artists. Once again Victoria will be hosting the national training conference in September 1999. WinMA endeavours to remove discrimination for women involved in martial arts. The fact members come from many styles of martial arts is testament that WinMA has been successful in uniting women and overcoming many of the barriers that exist within the martial arts. This success was demonstrated by WinMA Victoria becoming a finalist in the 1996 Prime Ministerial Women and Sport Awards for the category of Sporting Organisation Initiative.
