site of WineMate, the Palm Pilot Wine Tastings and Cellar
Database.
The authors created WineMate to provide a simple, easy to use and efficient way to store information about wine on the Palm Pilot. WineMate started out as a bit of a hobby, but as development evolved we decided it was worth making available to the wider wine loving community.
WineMate started out life as Shareware, but as of September 2004 and version 4.10 we have transitioned WineMate to an Open Source freeware application under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The reason for this change is that the original authors have found that less and less time was available to get things done and rather than let WineMate founder, it seemed like a better idea to let other have a crack at keeping WineMate alive and well.
For the uninitiated, the GNU GPL means that
the WineMate is a free application, but comes as is,
without any warranty. The source code is also freely
available and anyone can make changes or develop new a
new application based on the source, but any new
application developed must also be freeware.
As of August 2006, version 4.20 of WineMate is the final functional release of the application. After more than five years of sporadic development, we've run out of time and energy to put more time into WineMate. The application is pretty mature anyway and not much more can be done without significant rewrites.
Any significant bugs in the final version will be fixed when time permits, but in terms of functional changes, that's pretty much it. The full source code has now been posted to the downloads page, although the many iterations of development mean that parts of it are a bit of a dogs breakfast ! Good luck if you want to try to read and understand it ...
This Web site will remain here pretty much for as long as the service provider exists, so hopefully WineMate will still remain available for new users for some time to come ... but that's assuming PalmOS continues to survive as well !
