Welcome to the Wimmera Bushwalking Club

For those visitors from different parts of the world, you may like to call us the Wimmera 'Hiking' Club or 'Tramping' Club etc..., but whatever you call it, we all enjoy exploring the great outdoors.

You don't have to be an experienced 'outdoor' person. The whole idea of our club is to exchange knowledge and skills, mainly through participation....and the main thing....to have FUN.

30 Years+

Whilst we may be one of the smallest walking clubs around, we have managed to survive for more than 30 years - formed in 1972. Over those years, literally hundreds of members have passed through the club. Some of the original members are still in the club and we are always gaining new members.

Where are we?

The club is based in Horsham, in the heart of the Wimmera District (central - west Victoria, Australia) and consists of people from towns all around the district, including Horsham, Dimboola, Natimuk, Rupanyup and Stawell.

The heart of the Grampians National Park (where most of our walks are conducted) is within an hours drive south of Horsham, while Mt. Arapiles, famous around the world for it's rock-climbing, is only about a half hour drive west (near Natimuk). The Little Desert National Park is also located nearby, with the main accesses via Dimboola or Nhill.

Walks

We have a varied walk program ranging from easy daywalks, through to overnight walks and extended weekend trips.

With the rugged Grampians so close, most of our walks are conducted within it's various ranges. They offer a wide variety of terrain - from interesting rock formations, forested valleys, rugged cliff lines and many beautiful waterfalls.

Walks are also conducted in areas like The Black Ranges, Mt. Arapiles and Wyperfeld National Park. Whereas longer trips may take us to destinations such as the Victorian Alps, The Otways
, other coastal regions and sometimes even further afield.

Other Activities are often organised and may include: canoeing, bike riding, rock- climbing, horse riding, and cross-country (nordic) skiing.

Walk Grading

All walks are graded to give you an idea what to expect. Although, grading is somewhat 'relevant' to your experience and fitness level e.g. An 'easy' walk for an experienced or fit person may be a 'medium' or 'hard' walk for a beginner or not so fit person. The following guide may help to give an idea of what to expect.

EASY  Approx. 3 - 4 hour walk, mainly on walking trails with very few steep slopes or little rock scrambling.

MEDIUM   Approx. 5 - 6 hour walk on moderate slopes, possibly involving some off-trail "bush bashing" and/or rock scrambling.

HARD   We'll leave it your imagination!

REMEMBER!
Wherever we go or whatever we do, the main requirement is to bring along a sense of adventure and good humour.

Meetings

Members meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 8pm at various nominated locations (usually member's houses). There is usually an organised talk/ slide show of past walks or interesting videos to watch, with supper following. Future walks are also discussed and planned on the night too.

We also produce a monthly newsletter, covering the happenings at meetings, walk reports, other bushwalking related articles, and recent photos.
