How can YOU help our Australian native wildlife?

Australia has unique wildlife and many need our help. Their habitats are decreasing and they often need to travel, feed and live in the same area as humans. The future of some of our animals and birds is threatened.

Our native animals and plants evolved together over a very long time and they depend upon each other to survive.

There are many ways that everyone can get involved and help these special creatures, such as -

Emergency help

  • if you see an injured or orphaned animal please get for help with rescue - call your local Wildlife organisation eg Wildlife Victoria's Wildline 0500 540 000 who have volunteers on 24hrs 7 days a week
  • do not feed them as they are usually in shock - warmth and quiet are the best first aid
  • marsupial pouches need to be checked for healthy joeys if females have been killed - if in doubt please call 0500 540 000 for advice and rescue assistance
Long term help

  • help protect remaining habitats - wilderness corridors and native bushland, encouraging planting of native trees and flowering shrubs which are food sources
  • drive carefully particularly around dawn and dusk when animals and birds are trying to feed - many are noctural
  • domestic cats should be kept inside overnight and preferably confined to an attached adventure playground as they often kill native animals
  • dogs, foxes and other feral animals also kill our native animals k learn about the uniqueness of our wildlife and share with others
  • ponds, bird baths, wetlands, nesting boxes, insects and hollow trees and logs are valuable
  • support the volunteers who are registered wildlife carers and shelters in whatever way you can
  • adopt or donation to help an animal in care
