Cape Conran Wildlife Shelter is located in East Gippsland - a famous wilderness area in far east Victoria, Australia. This region features a diversity of native wildlife many within the three dramatic and totally different ecosystems in Croajingolong, Snowy River and Errinundra National Parks. East Gippsland is the most remote region of south-eastern Australia.
Helen Velden is a dedicated volunteer carer who provides high quality shelter and rehabilitation for Australian native animals who need help.
The Shelter cares for all types of Australian native animals. Some animals may have been rescued after being hit by a motor vehicle or injured in a dog or cat attack, bushfire, etc. Many of the lucky ones who make it to Helen are rescued orphans who have been found in the pouch of their mother who has been killed.Registered Wildlife Carers are dedicated volunteers who do NOT receive any funding from government and often need some help and donations to continue their special role. Special food, medications, enclosures, Veterinary expenses, as well as travelling costs related to rescue and vet visits can all be very expensive. Our special adoption program provides a unique opportunity for YOU to be involved in the rehabilitation of one of these special animals and be able to celebrate its return to the wild as quickly as possible. An adoption is a wonderful gift for animal-loving family and friends and is a positive way to build awareness and help Australia's wildlife. Not everyone can provide a home and daily care for these unique animals but many of us can help in lots of ways - support the carers, adopt an animal in care, protect our animals habitats, learn and teach others about them, drive carefully particularly around dawn and dusk, check pouches for babies if mothers are killed and if we find any injured or orphaned wildlife please call your local group so they can be rescued. (Victoria has Wildline 0500 540 000 with volunteers on 24hrs 7 days a week. ) Wildlife Carers in Australia operate under very strict regulations and all Australian native animals must be released back to the wild as quickly as possible. The average stay of our injured animals is about 6 weeks although orphans will usually be in care for around 18 months - until they are independent. We hope you enjoy learning about our Australian native animals and in particular Helen's favourite - the Wombat.
