THIS CHECKLIST IS PROVIDED BY ACROD FOR WHEELCHAIR
ACCESSIBILITY IN HOTELS/MOTELS
1.1 Is there a level, 3.2 metre wide parking bay? OR is assistance available for unloading/parking?
2.1. Is there level or ramped access from carpark to reception, if no, number of steps?
2.2 Are kerb/step ramps no steeper than 1:8, longer ramps no steeper than 1:14?
2.3 Is the entry free of any steps or ledges?
3.1. Is access from carpark to unit free of any steps or ledges? OR is there a ramp (1:8 for ramp up one step, or 1:14 for longer ramp) or lift?
3.2. Does door to unit have a clear opening of 800mm minimum?*
3.3 Is there sufficient circulation space outside and inside the door for a wheelchair user to open the door, enter, and close the door? (Varies according to type and size of door - eg. 1350 x 1350 required for an outward opening door 800 width).
3.4. Is door easy to open (no heavy spring or closer), are handles at 900 - 1100mm, and can door be opened with one hand?
4: BEDROOM
4.1 Is there a minimum of 800mm beside the bed to allow transfer? OR can bed be moved to achieve this?
4.2 Is space sufficient to turn a wheelchair? (2000 x 1600mm)
4.3 Is top of mattress 480-500mm from floor, or can bed be adjusted?
4.4 Are switches (light, TV) and phone within reach of bed? NOTE: It is desirable that facilities such as coathanging, teamaking, air-conditioner switch, etc., are within reach.
5: BATHROOM
5.1 Does door have a clear opening at 800mm minimum?
5.2 Is door easy to open (type and position of handle, weight)?
5.3 Is there sufficient space at doorway (outside and inside) to manoeuvre a wheelchair, open the door, enter, and close the door? Space requirements vary with size of doorway and whether door slides, or opens inward or outward.
5.4 Is there space to manoeuvre - minimum overall dimensions 2400 x 1900 max. in the toilet?
5.5 Is there 800mm beside toilet to back in for transferring?
5.6 From transfer positions beside and/or in front of toilet, can you reach across to grab rails?
5.7 Are grab rails positioned at 800- 810mm height beside and behind toilet?
5.8 Is toilet seat between 460 - 480mm height?
5.9 Are switches, power points, mirrors, etc., usable from seated position?
5.10 Is there knee space under the basin?
5.11 Is the shower free of hob, step or floor tracks? (Note: shower over bath = ‘not accessible’)
5.12 Is there space to manoeuvre a wheelchair in the shower? (1100 x I 600mm in shower, plus space outside shower) OR, if fixed screen, is opening a minimum 800mm and circulation space as above?
5.13 Are there grab rails in the shower?
5.14 Are grab rails at height 800 – 810mm?
5.15 Is there a seat, folding or free standing?
5.16 Is there a hand-held shower nozzle operable from a seated position?
5.17 Are taps between 900-1100mm height and of lever, capstan or sensor type?
6: RESTAURANT
6.1 Is access from unit to restaurant free of steps or raised thresholds?
6.2 Is there an accessible toilet in the restaurant or nearby?**
6.3 Does door have a clear opening of 800mm? If no restaurant or if not accessible, is room service available?
* This is a new measurement. The previous measurement was 760mm and this book has used that requirement as a guideline for minimum unit door width.
** The author of this book believes all public buildings, restaurants and tourist facilities should provide at least one unisex toilet, where a wheelchair user who needs assistance can take her/his carer or spouse without discomfort or embarrassment. Separate female and male disabled facilities are only of value to those with independent means.
