Westernport Cross Country Championships

It was a great morning at Balnarring for the Westernport Centre Cross Country Running Championships. The under 6/7 girls race was a close contest with Kayla Cheasley just keeping ahead of Matilda Cole.
The determination of Sarah Buchanan narrowly kept her ahead of Brittany Kyberd in the under 9/10 1500m race. Mollie Bowler also put in a great run for third place. Josh Kaiser put in a sizzling run in the boys race for a very good win.
The under 11/12 boys again had a thrilling race with Tom Cole narrowly beating Nic Jones across the line after 2000m. Renee Rogasch stole the honours in the girls race ahead of Kimberley Kyberd with Stephanie Comfort putting in a great run for third place.
Cassie Slavin looked to have the better of Chloe Barnes in the under 13-15 3000m race but Chloe's big strides over the closing stages opened up a narrow gap that she held to the finish. Dale Carter comfortably lead the boys home ahead of Steven Gravina and Shane Carter who both put up a great effort.
The 9 person relay race at the end was another great event with lots of support from all team mates. The exciting finish as Renee passed Chloe and just race out of space to catch Cassie had everyone cheering.
Trophies and certificates were then presented for the season and everyone enjoyed the barbecue lunch.
Well done to our organisers Nat & Mark for all of their work and thank you to all of the parents that helped to make it a great season of running for the kids.

The course at Balnarring is through bushland with track markings at regular intervals. We also ask for parents to help at checkpoints to avoid athletes losing their way.
Walk the course at 8.45am on race days.
Racing starts at about 9.00am after the athletes have done a short warm-up run and after they have done some stretching.

Westernport age groupings (as of 1-10-2003) for end of year trophies & certificates are:-

New registrations are $30.00 and the cost for local races is $2.00 per athlete on each race day. Cost for Open Day events and Region Championships to be advised latter in the season.

Dandenong Open Day Results

There was a big turn out of Westernport athletes for the Dandenong open day cross country competition.
Dale Carter's determination helped him to come home first in the interath race. New recruit, Cassie Slavin also ran very well for a good second place in the under 14 girls 3000m event.
Surprise packet of the day was the excellent run from Brittany Kyberd to finish second in the Under 9 girls race. Her sister Kimberley continued her good form this season with a solid seventh place in the under 11 girls race. Renee Rogash made a welcome return in the Westernport colours to finish with a bronze medal in the same race with Ella Spiby in tenth place and Jacqueline Gregory in thirteenth giving our team a great finish.
Stephen Gravina was another Westernport athlete to pick up a bronze medal in the Under 15 boys race. Tom Cole finished just outside the placings in the Under 11 race but will improve with a few more races in tougher company.
Other to do well were Joshua O'Brien(U6), Kayla Cheaseley(U7) and Luke Cheasley(U9). Well done to all the athletes who turned up for the day. This race will sharpen their conditioning as they head toward the Region championships in the next couple of weeks.
