Victorian Cross Country Championships 2003

Thomas Cole snared Westernport's first cross country individual state medal with a great run at Lardner Park, Drouin to secure bronze in the under 10 boys race. Tom's run was even more meritious as he has been suffering from Sever's disease and has not been able to run for the past two months.
Backing up Tom with determined running were Nic Jones (12th) and Leigh Meredith(26th) and together they clinched a team silver medal medal for Westernport.
It was a great race by all of the boys and a worthy outcome for all of the hard work that they
have been putting in during the season.
Our under 9 boys also came very close to a medal with Cameron Smith, and Joshua Kaiser pushing each other to finish very high up in the final placings. The under 8 girls will be worth watching next season as they have shown a lot of improvement this season.

Westernport Cross Country Championships 2003

What a fantastic day to finish off the season. The weather was great, our athletes tried their hardest, we had a lot of fun with the relay race and the kids went home with a medal and a smile on their faces.
Trophies were presented to the top 3 season point scorers, for coach's awards and for sportsmanship.
Well done to Mark Cole and Nat Morton for organising and running such a great season of cross country running.

Lee Naylor Coaching Clinic

Thanks to Lee for coming along and showing our kids a thing or two about top level competition. The athletes had a ball and were not shy at asking a few questions with Lee's vast experience coming up with the right answers.
A lunch time sausage and a warm at the open fire finished off the day nicely amongst the gum trees. Thanks again Lee.

Region Cross Country

On 28th June at Ray Canobie Reserve, Pakenham.
We had our biggest field ever entered for the Region championships. Our athletes have had a great season so far and were looking forward to the Region qualifing round in preparation for the State Championships to be held at Lardner Park in July.
It was perfect weather conditions and the course was undulating and demanding. Our athletes handled the terrain well, especially those who had been doing some extra training at Ballam Park.
We had 37 athletes and 7 teams qualify for the state championships. The under 10 boys look the strongest and are a big chance to do well at Lardner Park. The six boys will be trying hard to fill the top 3 positions for the number 1 team as well as earning individual honours.
Our under 8 girls also look very strong but will have to wait another year before trying to gain state recognition. We hope that they will learn a lot from their experience at state level competition and continue on as a group into next season.
Our open men performed expremly well with Dale Carter flashing across the line in first place. Nick Hodder battled hard for third place with our chairperson Tony Gay putting in a strong effort to finish seventeenth.
Belinda Kirkham was suffering from a bad cold but still managed to finish third against her much younger rivals.
Congradulations to everyone that competed and to all of our parents who help out as officials on the day.

Seawinds Race

Our centre had a great day with the Southern Peninsula athletes at one of their favourite venue's "Seawinds" at Arthurs Seat, Dromana. The wide open spaces of the undulating course were a big contrast to our own races through the narrow bushland trails at Balnarring. The athletes enjoyed the extra company for the races and the parents enjoyed the friendly companionship watching from the top of the hill.
Some of the athletes even spotted a few kangaroos and kookaburra nearby.
A free sausage and chat after the running made it an enjoyable morning for everyone.

School Results

Westernport had 4 winners at the Primary School District cross country championships at Woodleigh College. Tom Cole, Nick Jones, Cameron Smith and Brittany Kyberd all put in some great running to head the field home in their respective age groups. Kimberley Kyberd also qualified for the next round of the school's championships with another solid run to finish in eighth place.
The next round is on Friday May 23 at Mornington Racecourse.

Season 2003

The new cross country season will start on April 12.
The competition will again be at the popular Emu Plains location at the Balnarring Racecourse. The course runs through the bushland with the occasional hurdle or two and is well marked for the athletes to follow.
There is a sheltered area including some tables and chairs and an open fireplace.
Please Note:- NO DOGS ALLOWED at the Balnarring Racecourse venue.
Registration is $18.00 with race fees of $2.00 per head for all registered athletes.
Race fees to cover the cost of trophies, certificates, newsletters and equipment maintenance.
Please arrive and register before 8.45am on race days.
Some Mornington Little Athletic Centre athletes will be joining us this season and invitation days with Southern Peninsula have also been included in the program.
