Season 2008/09

Season 2008/09 get underway on October 4.
If you have been inspired by the Olympics then come on down and join in the friendly competition as our young athletes learn their skills to better their own performance. Join a relay team and be part of our local group of dedicated and committed members as they train as a group.
A new web site will probably start up this season which will be directly linked to the state system. You will be able get your region and state competition information a lot quicker. It is shaping up to be a great season for the Westernport area athletes.
Make sure that you sign up for all of the action.

Our small bamd of distance runners had a great cross country season. Check out the photos on our cross country page.

VLAA Championships 2008

Sarah Buchanan made the final of the Under 13 girls 80m Hurdles event with a brilliant run to finish second in her heat.
She started well in the final but could not reproduce the same pace after a very hot afternoon in the sun and finished eighth.
Sarah also had the triple jump before her final and came 9th in that competition.
Cathy Runting finished 12th in the Under 11 girls Shot Put with a personal best throw of 7.23m.
Adele Palmer made the final of the Under 14 girls 100m by running a personal best of 13.08 seconds.
With only the ninth fastest time she produced another great run to finish sixth (time 13.16).
The following day Adele also made the final of the girls Under 14 200m event where she finished eighth.
Natasha Ormond-Hall jumped 3.90m in the Under 11 girls long jump to finish 11th.
Another Under 11 with bounce at state was Brittini Lanchester who jumped 1.15m in the High Jump event.
The Under 9 girls were represented by Annie Duntine who ran 1:19.99 in her heat of the 400m.
Our tall Meagan Bursa finished 18th in the Under 14 girls Shot Put event with a distance of 7.70m.
It was a very hot weekend and everyone performed extremely well under the conditions. Lets see if we can get some boys up to state at next year's championships.

Westernport 2008 Championships

The 100m handicap races were again the highlight of the day.
The best athletes in each age group had to qualify through two heats with the first three placegetters going on to the final.
Jacob Cartwright(U12) won the boys race with frontmarker Marshal Hunt(U9) just holding off our backmarker Adam Hurst (U17) for second place. The winning time was just below Adam's best time for the season.

The girls race was very exciting and was won by Sarah Buchanan (U13) with backmarker Mika Tulen (U14) second with Natasha Ormond-Hall (U11) a very close third. The first three girls ran under Adele Palmer's best time for the season of 13.63 seconds.

Edward Schwarz won the U6-8 boys handicap in a very tight race against Ryan Eastland.

The U6-8 girls race was won from the backmark by Jessica Guy-Toogood (U7) from Hannah Morris (U8) and Sarah Kennedy(U6)

The VLAA State Championships will be held at Bendigo.
Westernport has 9 girls that have qualified for these championships and we wish them all the best of luck
as they stive to perform at their very best. There may even be a medal or two going by the achievements at
the SMR championships.

SMR Championships 2008

SMR Championships will be held on 15 & 16th of February at Ballam Park, Frankston.
Qualifers wil then go to the State Championships on the 15th 16th March in Bendigo.
Adele Palmer set a blistering pace to win the U14 girls 200m race. Another great run by Mia Tulen for fourth place in the same race.
Adele makes it a double header as she won the U14 girls 100m race with Mia again in fourth place.
Mia's time in the 200m was fast enough to earn a spot in the state championships.

Westernport 2007-08

Great to see everyone back at the track with plenty of new faces to keep the competition interesting.

Some great action in the sprints with athletes keen post some good times to get into the relay squads.
The long jump pit was especially busy and the javelin event produced some great throws for the start of the season.
Cathy Runting produced a huge distance with her last attempt in the shot put and she will be trying again to make it
to the state championships latter in the season.

As you can see by the photos above everyone had a great run in the 800m events and were keenly encouraged by
parents and other athletes.
It is not too late to join up if you haven't already done so.

Westernport Championships 2007

Our young guns upset the favoutites in the 100m handicap races.
Ryan Franzi was red hot favourite in the boys race after posting a new centre record and beating his season's best time by 0.6 of a second in the first heat. Tyler Matthes won the second heat in a close race from Alex Buchanan and Matt DeGroot.
Alex and Tyler had other ideas in the final as they pushed each other all the way down the straight and fractionally across the line ahead of Ryan in the closeset finish ever for the boys event.
Mia Tulen and Kristen DeGroot won the heats of the girls events with Sarah Buchanan also under the handicapers target time of 13.70 seconds. Brittini Lanchester-Hawker had the slowest qualifing time for the final but she found a new lease of life and gave the others little chance to catch her in the final race. Backmarker Mia finished second after another great run with Sarah and Kristen deadheating for third place.
Full results on our 2007 web page.

High Jump Record Broken

Adam Hurst and Ryan Franzi staged a great high jump competition with both boys breaking the club high jump record.
Ryan eventually going out with a clearance at 1.57m and Adam soring to 1.62m and narrowly missing at 1.64m.
It must have inspired our younger athletes as many set personal best performances straight after the teenage competition. Well done to everyone but we still need more parents to help out our athletes.

Welcome to 2007

Westerport start the new year with a competition day on January 20.
The second meeting for 2007 will be a twlight meeting on Wednesday January 24.
I hope that everyone has their entries in for the Region track and field championships.
