VLAA Championships 2008

Rachael Tallent was in great form and stamped her authority to win the Under 15 girls even in 6:58.59. Beth Alexander was second ahead of Ayla Collins and Emily Payne with a strong field of 20 girls contesting the event.
Amy Burren with a broken big toe still managed to win the Under 14 girls 1500m event. Chelsea Dyer battled with Amy early in the race but was overtaken by the stronger Hilary Brazel.
Ebony Whiley had a narrow win over Amelia Finnegan in the Under 13 girls race. Not far behind Ebony Tallent narrowly took third spot from Caitlin Campbell. This was a very keenly contested event with all seventeen girls in the field walking with great style.
Knox is a very strong walking club and Bianca Attard showed her strength to win the under 12 girls event from Stephanie George and Jmara Hockley Samon.
Dandenong's Sarah Burren made it a family double again when she won the Under 11 girls 1500m race. Carly Bertrand was the only one to again keep Sarah honest with a much improved Chloe McNicol-Davidson from Seaford in third place. Rebecca Campbell finished a close fourth from Alexandra Brunton and Billie Whitelaw.

The under 15 boys 1500m event was won by Bradley Simpson. David Cowan has improved greatly this season and finished in second place ahead of Adrian Coad. Steven Marsh faded to fifth after a strong showing early in the race.
Lewis Clark eventually cleared out to clinched another gold medal in a very closely contested under 14 boys competition. Jacob Wright finished second from the much improved Dylan Sloan from Seaford.
Showing a lot of control, Nunawading's Ryan Antidormi went on to win the under 13 boys race from Josh Dillion. The tall figure of Aaron Gardner finished third from Dacy Irwin who finally broke away from a great contest further back in the field.
The tightest finish of the day came in the under 12 boys race with Caulfield's Sebastian Graham just holding off a great surge by Lucas Taylor in a race that was action packed. Both boys have improved greatly this season and we look forward to their progress in the future. Corio's Lachlan Dillion eventually finishing third from B Maskell and Connor McShanag. photo of SMRwalk photo of Amy photo of Daniel

VLAA State Championships 2004

Results are available at the VLAA web site.
Congratulations to all of our young walkers who competed at the state championships. The standard of race walking was very high and there were very few reports in most of the races. A little bit of training can make the world of difference at this level of competition.
A.Burren(Dandenong)was the only girl from SMR to win a gold medal in an outstanding time of 5:56.7 in the Under 10 1100m event. Dana Neilsen(U14, Waverley), C.Di Francesco (U12 Brighton) and T.Collins (U9 Dandenong) won silver medals with Sarah Alexander (U15 Oakleigh) and M.Graham (U11 Caulfield) winning a bronze medal.
D.Sloan from Seaford patience paid off in the Under 10 Boys event and he eventually took out the gold medal. T.Harrison (U12 Waverley) and S.Grayson (U13 Casey) won silver medals with J.McSweeney (U9 Dandenong) picking up a bronze medal with a very controlled performance.

RACE WALKING RULES

1. Race Walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground, so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs.
2. The advancing leg shall be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the vertical upright position.

WALK JUDGING

Without judging the sport would not exist. Judging attempts to make it as fair as possible for all walkers who are complying with the rules of race walking.
"Cautions" - these are verbal instructions to the athletes that they may be in danger of not complying with the rules of race walking. The athlete should take notice of the judge and try to correct their style.
"Reports" - If a judge believes that the athlete is not complying with one of the rules of race walking, they will be given a report which is noted on judge's report card. The judge's report cards are handed to the chief judge at the end of a race (for short track races)for the chief judge to take the appropriate action.
"Chief Judge" - The chief judge explains the rules of race walking before the competition commences and tallies up the reports at the end of a race (short races). The chief judge also informs the athletes about their reports and advises them if a disqualification has been imposed on their result and gives them the reasons for that action.

RACE WALKING TECHNIQUE

Posture - The body should be straight and tall with a very minimal lean forward.
Head - Chin up and looking long down the track. Keep the head still and not rocking from side to side.
Shoulders - Keep them down and relaxed so that there is an easy arm swing.
Arms - Should be bent at about 85o and the arm swing should be from the shoulders. The hands should swing from the hip up to about chest height. The hands should not cross the centre line of the body with the action forward and back not across the body.
Hips - By rotating the hips slightly forward and driving from the rear leg there is a noticeable increase in stride length. Try not to rock the hips from side to side, it should be a forward and back action.
Knees - Do not lift the knee too high as it swings forward and the leg should be straightened as contact is made with the ground. The leg remains straight until it passes under the body and into the driving phase.
Feet - Hold the toes up on contact with the ground and roll over the foot as the body pushes forward. The rear leg drives forward with the toes rising higher as the athlete gains more strength. With proper hip rotation foot placement should be in a straight line for maximum stride length.
Speed - Practice techniques slowly at first and build up speed gradually. Quicker leg speed can be achieved with a little practice. Longer stride length will usually come as the athlete gets stronger with race fitness.
