Aims of group, especially in relation to maintaining non-urban uses within the south-east green wedge

The 'Defenders of the South East Green Wedge' is a coalition of groups committed to reinforcing the vision of the planners of over 30 years ago in providing for a viable green wedge stretching from the south-east metropolitan area to the Mornington Peninsula and Westernport Bay, ensuring that environmental and social values are given full consideration.
We submit that this can only be achieved through the retention of the green area as described in the South-East Non-Urban Study report of February 1997, and by ensuring that no development occurs within this area which would be detrimental to environmental values as recognised in that report.

The group's high level goals include the following:

  • Protect quality of life
  • Protect flora and fauna
  • Protect farms and their output
  • Protect scenic values
  • Protect recreational values
  • Educate the community on environment values
  • Implement unified planning

Specific targets include:

  • Publicly promote green wedge issues and threats
  • Have a moratorium placed on development until integrated planning is complete - including Sandhurst Estate, Botanic Ridge Estate, and the Potts Rd Langwarrin rezoning application
  • Stop Scoresby Freeway
  • Protect Westernport Bay environmental values
  • Quantify the extent and value of native flora and fauna in the area
  • Determine potential flooding impacts if certain developments proceed
  • Ascertain value of aboriginal sites
  • Seek support from large organisations
  • Monitor vigilance of local councils in complying with their strategic plan
