The
objective
of
the project is to create a regional book index to assist
with local and family history research.
The
content of the regional book index will be:
- Books
published about people and places in the West Bourke Region
- Indexes
of published books which do not already have a back-of-book
index
- Indexes
of published books which have been indexed and the author
agrees to adding it to the project
A
list will
be established of suitable book titles to be included in
the index. Feel free to email
us with suggested book titles for
the West Bourke Region Book
Index.
Volunteers
who would like to be involved in indexing should contact us
first
and register the book they wish to index so that there will be no
duplication of effort.
Because
my computer expertise is in the mediocre category, I would ask
that indexers use Excel. You don't need to do any sorting
yourself beforehand, but you
can if you wish (just don't scramble the
page numbers!) This should be the format:

ONE
Excel index file per book title, please. Give full
publication details of the book indexed - Full title, author,
publisher, edition, year of publication.
Rules for indexing
1 Use
the usual rules for writing sentences - capital letters at the
beginning, capital letters for persons' names and names of companies or
properties.
eg Brown, Edgar, Captain;
Keilor Plains;
Emu
Bottom.
2
Don't use all capital letters.
3
Don't put in punctuation except for commas as appropriate - punctuation
becomes part of the sorting, so if you have an entry for "Mt Aitken
Homestead", this will appear before the letter A - it would be
better for it to
appear in with M, so please leave out the inverted commas.
Likewise, an apostrophe will affect the sorting, so leave those out to
achieve consistency of sorting.
4
Surnames first, then given names or initials (without full stops), then
titles. eg Brown, W D, Dr (not Brown,
W. D., Dr.)
5 Do not be selective about what you include in the
index, try and include every name, every place, every event, every
organisation, every subject.
