Closing the gap

Landcarers

Landcarers Landcarers

The Osborne Peninsula Landcare Group marked National Tree Day late last month with a planting along the Yarra riverbank in North Warrandyte. The 500 indigenous plants were grown from local seed propagated in the group's nursery. On that cold, wet Sunday, State Park ranger Justin Welander joined Landcare members and friends, helping to close the last gap in the native wildlife corridor around the Osborne Peninsula. The work was supported by a grant from Envirofund.

Greenies at council

More than 3500 Manningham residents attended council-initiated practical environmental programs in 2007-08.

These programs included sustainable homes and gardening workshops and the Get Green at School program.

"The huge response demonstrated the degree to which local residents are concerned about global warming and the drought," a council spokesperson told the Diary.

"The programs have targeted everyone from home owners to youth, as well as primary school children.

"Council's environmental officers possess tremendous knowledge about practical solutions which people can put in place now, and our sustainability programs are an ideal vehicle to pass on advice to others."
