History

The Past

WAVERLEY ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM INC. has been operating in the Monash region since 1978.

The program began at the Waverley Learning Centre with a handful of volunteers offering basic literacy to the people of Waverley.

The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in the need to extend the program.  Today we offer small groups throughout Monash as well as one-to-one tuition.

Over the years the Program has boasted many successes with a number of students going on to further study for example - TAFE colleges or Universities.   Others have gained promotion in their jobs and some have obtained employment after learning the basic skills of form filling and letter writing.

Students come to Waverley Adult Literacy Program for a variety of reasons.  Some may be attempting tertiary study for the first time and find their organisational skills need some attention.

We help.

Others may not be able to write their name and address.

We help.

Still others may have a spelling or speaking problem that needs some attention.

Waverley Adult Literacy Program is a community program -

Run By the Community, For the Community.

Our success is largely due to the non-threatening environment that has been created by our volunteer tutors and our dedicated teaching staff.

Waverley Adult Literacy Program holds the philosophy that literacy is the right of each individual.  Our aim is to endeavour to provide a basic education to any adult in the community seeking to improve their basic literacy skills and thus enhance their lifestyle.

The Future

In this millennium, we would like to think our services will no longer be required - perhaps in an ideal world this may be so.

We will, however, continue to provide a basic education to those seeking our assistance and with the aid of government funding and the in-kind support of Monash Council, we will endeavour to deliver our programs at a cost  which is affordable to all in the community.
