Workers Memorial Day – April 28
Service held at Trades Hall Friday 27 April 2007 – 10am

The Victorian Trades Hall Council will hold a commemorative service at the Workers Memorial Rock on Lygon St on Friday 27 April.
The commemoration is one of many events held throughout Australia. It is estimated that around 10,000 separate events are held in 100 countries throughout the world to mark International Workers Memorial Day.
International Workers’ Memorial Day was first marked by Canadian unions in 1984 and was adopted internationally in 1996. Australian unions began observing the day in 1996. In Victoria a memorial service is held each year at the Memorial Rock at Trades Hall.
The memorial rock was unveiled in 2000 to commemorate those workers who have lost their lives as a result of their work.

We Built This City

Construction and building workers’ greatest skills and experiences were crafted and choreographed to build a roving rock performance event which celebrated the great strength and skill of builders in Melbourne who daily put their lives on the line and rightly proclaim ‘We built this city!’

Directed by Donna Jackson, We Built This City featured a cast of unionists to form an industrial percussion ensemble coordinated by Mark Grunden, a rock band with anthems written and performed by Mark Seymour, the Trades Union Choir and a dance of heavy machinery set to a grunty percussion line-up.

We Built this City was staged at Scienceworks in the 19th century Pumping Station which is classified by the National Trust.
