Trugo like Australian Rules Football is one of Victoria's few indigenous sports, unlike football however, Trugo has remained in the same areas of Melbourne it started in and has a small but loyal group of around three hundred participants.
The game 'Trugo' originated in the Newport railyards in the 1920s. It was originally played by railyard workers on their lunchbreaks. The origins of the name 'Trugo', is the cause of debate, some suggest the game was derived from the letters T and G, the initials of the 'Father' of Trugo, Thomas Greaves.
Another theory is that when a goal in trugo was scored, watchers on would shout that the shot was a 'TRUE GO'.
The first formal game of the new sport was played in Yarraville, Melbourne in 1925. With the support of local businesses, the first Trugo club was formed soon after.
By the 1930's a Trugo league had formed, with the suburbs of Newport, South Melbourne, Port Melbourne and Preston represented.
Today the game of Trugo is still being played between clubs at Ascot Vale, Brunswick, Footscray, Port Melbourne, Preston, South Melbourne, Sandridge and at the home of Trugo, Yarraville.
