Copies of the public liability policy will be sent to the clubs with the next newsletter. · Changes in Insurance to be discussed at a meeting with Stubbsy date to be confirmed. We will contact Graham and see if he can make it to the next VSMA meeting. · Matt & Mandy attended the last AOMC meeting and it would appear that the change in committee is a good move, the VSMA may rejoin in the near future. · From the AOMC meeting we found that leaded fuel may again be made available to owners of "classic and historical vehicles". You can apply for a booklet which will enable you to purchase leaded fuel from selected outlets (probably airports or similar) we will pass on any more info when it becomes available. · The AOMC will be having a seminar on 5th July to discuss how to get younger members to join the car clubs. (This should prove to be very interesting from a group who, generally, do not know the difference between Hot Rods. Street Machines and Stereo Heads) Detail of where and when will be passed on when we have them. · Matt & Mandy have started preliminary discussions with another possible company for public liability insurance. We have only had preliminary discussions however the insurance company representative we spoke with, at length, is in a position to discuss the possible options with his company with a view to keeping insurance at an affordable level for car clubs. · The same person is also lobbying several politicians from both sides of the fence and in between to reinstate the laws regarding incorporation which would, to a great extent make public liability insurance obsolete. We will keep you all informed if anything comes from this. · M&M also attended a Gemini meeting recently to discuss the insurance and associated problems. · March 29th is the run to Euroa. It is a BYO everything, picnic day organized so that our country members can get to meet some of the city members. There is a convoy of sorts being organized to leave from the Ford factory around 10 or 10:30 am. Please feel free to bring club banners etc. The picnic will be in the park beside the river. We also ask that you all behave as the park is only about 100meter from the police station. · Geoff asked what was happening with the "A" board, and what did we want on it? Geoff advised that he had an "A" board we could use, however it was only single sided. A brief discussion followed re what to put on it. All clubs present were asked if there were any problems with putting all the clubs names on the board. All present agreed. Croydon cruise night this Tuesday, last one for the year possibly. · Keith: Street Class went to the Hastings day. Very disappointed that although his vehicle is Japanese they did not give out the top Japanese award because there were no Japanese vehicles there. There were about 100 cars. Those members who went feel that the car show was so far away from the main festival most people did not even know it was there. The Hound Dog Show may be on again this year. SCC are having a tin shake in Lilydale for Good Friday appeal. · Steve: Street Class, they will be doing stewarding at Easter Nats. They are looking for a jack to put under cars for checking for tailshaft loops etc. · Paul: Gemini's, Big River run ended up as 2 runs 50km's apart. Was very wet. Having a rung to Werribee Zoo at the end of March. The dyno for Easter nats is by pre-entry only and so far they have only 5 vehicles booked in. · Asbestos brakes to be phased out this year. · Next Meeting we will try to get stubbsy down to discuss everything in relation to insurance etc. We would like to have representatives from as many clubs as possible to put their clubs points across and take the relevant information back to their clubs. Meeting is April 10th 2003 to be confirmed. · Meeting Closed: 9:40pm Some interesting Top Fuel dragster facts: · One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower then the first 8 rows at Daytona · Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume. · The supercharger takes more power to drive then a stock hemi makes. · Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock. · Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. · At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F. · Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. · Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting of it's fuel flow. · If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half. · Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons. · To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's. · If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second. · Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this sentence. · Top Fuel Engines ONLY turn 540 revolutions from light to light! · The redline is actually quite high at 9500rpm · To give you an idea of this acceleration, the current TF dragster elapsed time record is 4.477 seconds for the quarter mile. This means that you could be coming across the starting line in your average Lingenfelter powered "twin-turbo" Corvette at 200 mph (on a FLYING START) and the dragster would BEAT you to the finish line FROM A DEAD STOP in a quarter mile distance! The VSMA would like to invite all its members and associates to our first "City meets the Country" Picnic day. · Where: The picnic will be in the town or Euroa, half way between Melbourne and Albury. · When: Saturday March 29th 2003 · What to bring: BYO everything. There are BBQ's on site but only 4. If we get a big turnout and you want a BBQ you may have to wait. · Why: The idea of the whole event is to let all the VSMA members from the City meet the VSMA members from the country. · Who is invited: Anyone interested in the sport of Street Machining. We ask all who attend to remember that this is a picnic day, not a car games event, and the local Constabulary is located just up the road from the park.
