History of the VRFBAIn 1928 a two day meeting in Melbourne of representatives of bush fire brigades from across the State resulted in the establishment of the Bush Fire Brigades Association. With the enactment of the Victorian Country Fire Authority Act (1944), the name of the Association was changed to the Victorian Rural Fire Brigades Association. This act also created the Victorian Urban Fire Brigades Association, a sister organisation to the VRFBA. Under section 100(1) of the
CFA Act the Association was granted a privileged position of strength to
seek and bring about improvements in the fire service within the management
of the CFA, and to safeguard the interests of its members.
The Purposes of the VRFBA
Role of the AssociationAutonomous AssociationThe Association functions as an autonomous and independent organisation with its funds sourced from the brigades and groups with a membership fee. This is supplemented with an annual grant from the State Government. These funds enable the Association to provide a professional secretariat to service its requirements. Represents Wider Community The Association does not represent narrow sectional interests but wider community interests from whom it draws its strength in personnel and inspiration. Committed to Rural Volunteers The Association has a total commitment to the CFA's rural volunteer firefighters serving the community in a voluntary capacity. For over seventy years, it has represented the interests of 1000 rural brigades, 143 groups, and over 64,000 volunteer firefighters. The VRFBA is the largest and most representative organisation of its type in Australia. top Consultative MechanismsThe VRFBA Central Council consists of an executive and representatives from each of twenty-one regional councils. Each regional council is composed of representatives from groups of brigades. Brigade groups are collectives of brigades.
