Project:-

Short-tailed Shearwater Banding     [Photos]

Expanded Project - fitting Geolocators to track Short Tailed Shearwaters - [details]

Location:-

Cliff tops at Cape Woolami, Phillip Island, Victoria.

When:-

Twice a year, in April and in October.

Details:-

Banding of Short-tailed Shearwaters by VORG has been running for many years.

The October banding trip occurs in the evening.  This trip involves the banding of adult shearwaters which are in the process of nest building.  As the sun sets the birds silently return from feeding over the ocean.  A spectacular sight!

After the birds land the chase is on!  The birds rarely take to the air once they have landed and can be caught on the surface before they reach their burrows.

The April banding trip is completely different to that in October.  At this time of year the adult birds have left the colony to return to the Northern Hemisphere leaving the nearly fledged chicks behind.  The banding takes place during the day.  The chicks are found in burrows.
