Penguin Study Group           [Photos]

Location:-

Phillip Island

When:-

Monthly

Details:-

The Penguin Study Group started after an inquiry in 1966 about banding penguins for identification purposes by Bert West, one of the originators of the Penguin Parade in the late 1920's.  As a result of this inquiry Pauline Reilly, the honorary Regional Organiser in Victoria for the CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research, Australian Bird Banding Scheme, became interested and eventually, after extensive inquiries and procurement of suitable bands, works started on a regular basis on the 17th of August 1968 in a chosen area in the Summerland Reserve, Phillip Island.

For the first three years visits were made weekly, birds were banded, burrows checked in the afternoon and also at night after the birds came ashore.

In 1971 visits were changed to every fourth week.

Visits are also made to the Bass Strait Islands, particularly around Wilson's Promontory to monitor the penguins nesting in these regions.

Recruits for the Penguin Study Group are always welcome as long as you are not averse to being:

Shat upon

Bitten and scratched by Penguins

Bitten by penguin fleas

Wet, cold, frozen and in season, boiling amongst the sand dunes

These are a few of the pleasures of Penguineering!!
