Project:-

Lorikeets of the Melbourne Region

Location:-

The survey  area was covered by Melway Map numbers 1 to 200.

When:-

This project is now in the final stages of analysis and write up.

Details:-

Anecdotal evidence suggests that several species of lorikeet are visiting Melbourne in greater numbers than previously and are staying longer.  To clarify the situation and provide baseline data against which to measure future changes, VORG initiated a survey to document the distribution,  abundance, seasonal occurrence and habitat of Lorikeets and the Swift Parrot in the Melbourne Region including the Mornington Peninsula.

The objectives of the survey were to:

record details of sightings of the six species in the survey area.

plot the distribution of each species within the survey area.

determine seasonal patterns of occurrence and abundance.

determine major food types and relate these to the point above

examine historical information on distribution of each species to document changes in distribution and abundance.

The survey relied on observers to record their sightings on observation sheets and submit them to the co-ordinator for processing.
