The concept was spawned from the popular 'N' Track standards, however it was considered that three running tracks was not typical of most Australian mainlines, so some other standards were required.  After much to-ing and fro-ing by a few dedicated to the cause, with input from several clubs and groups, a set of module criteria was agreed between SANGS, NSW N Scale Group, Victorian N Scale Collective and AMRA WA.  AusTrak, as the standards became known, was officially launched at the N Scale Convention in Canberra in 1997.

For members of the Victorian N Scale Collective (VNSC), the modular system met many needs.  Most members did not have space for a layout at their home, but a 1200 by 600 module, where they could display their individual modelling skills, was a practical alternative.  This gave any member the opportunity to build one or more small part of a large exhibition layout.

VNSC members had also enjoyed being part of several exhibitions using Wallan (owned by two members) and by supporting Phil Badger with the operation of Richmond during Phil's stay in Melbourne.  One of the Collective's aims is to promote Australian outline (particularly Victorian) N scale, so a new exhibition layout was deemed necessary.  The modular system allows many people to participate in the construction of the layout, allows a degree of flexibility while maintain a degree of standardisation, makes transportation of the layout easy (you bring your own) and by putting the modules together in different ways, allows flexibility of the layout size and shape.

Basically we like modelling, didn't want to become an over governed group, just wanted to talk about, and play, trains.   The modular system was the way to go.

The timberwork for the first 10 modules was constructed by a professional carpenter, this gave us a great kick off. Subsequently several more modules have been constructed and several more are being built.  Currently we can choose from 9 modules that are completed to a standard suitable for exhibiting.  At present we operate the modules as a "dogbone" layout using the hidden rear track as storage and to rotate the trains running in the public eye on the front two tracks.   We currently use 3 controllers; Outer Main line. Inner Main line and Back Main line (behind the backboard).  AusTrak standards also allow for a local controller on any module(s).  Several corner modules are under construction.

The modules have also given rise to many clinics for VNSC members, with topics ranging from timberwork and wiring through to scenery and building construction. They have also provided many opportunities for members to work together, to help each other and share their particular skills.
