Suburban Steam Train, 1890

This model engine was built by Alan Shorter and was weighted with mercury to improve its adhesion! Sometime after the exhibition, whilst on display in the maker's home, the model collapsed in a particularly spectacular fashion. The mercury had amalgamated with the tin in the solder and destroyed the joints in the brass body.
