Veterans Wives Group |
Newsletter on the Net - No. 10 - 11 June 2003A great get together again! A very wet and stormy miserable winter's night, but we all had a wonderful night. Sixteen ladies braved the elements to enjoy each others company, and it is always more difficult for some than others. One of our widows is off to Bundaberg in Queensland to start a new life. Although we are sad to see her go, we wish Kaye 2 as we affectionately call her, all the best of luck and hope she enjoys the sunshine up there. A couple of the girls went shopping through the day, to pick a present for her as a memento of her time with our group. We had a little presentation and gave Kaye a lovely set of gold earrings and a card signed by everyone who was there. We will miss you Kaye. The week before our meeting, I had a call from Maureen Wilde of the Frankston ladies group, to invite us to meet with them to discuss our groups and how they work. This was put to the girls and we have agreed to meet the Franston ladies somewhere between Frankston and Ringwood, and suggested Dandenong RSL for lunch. The Frankston girls will now discuss this at their meeting and they will give us some dates to work with. Maureen also spoke about a meeting to be held at Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service in Hawthorn on Fri Sept 26th. This meeting is for anyone interested in forming the Victorian branch of the Partners of Veterans Australia. I will be attending and a number of girls have said they will also go along. We agreed we would like to have a representative on their committee, but we will still maintain our own identity. We agree that a combined group is more powerful when it comes to dealing with problems, and political issues, but would like to remain low key on a Wednesday night. For some time I have been thinking of ways to get girls involved in their particular interests. I put forward a list of 'positions' for want of another word, to be shared around by one or more of the girls. It was great to see, that many had areas that were important to them, and that they wished to 'be in charge of'. I have included a list of who is doing what and also other 'positions' available. This was not voted on and is purely on a basis of enjoyment.
Already things are moving along:
By handing out responsibility we are not formalising our meeting, but giving everyone a chance to follow the area they feel is most important. We all have different priorities and this gives everyone a go. I feel that it is a great step in the group, and opens more areas of interest for us all. If you feel you can offer anything, go for it! There was a lot of discussion among the girls, and everyone was moving about, to talk with each other. We are very keen not to have any one sit on their own, and to feel welcome. There were more cards available to be handed out with our details on them. They are working well and I will try to have them on the table each month for anyone to take to hand around. Despite the weather, some of us stayed around too long, but had a great night. Keep Smiling, and come along to join us. Sylvia |
