Browne Shield News - Version 2 - including 10km results and individual points competition. (added 17 July 2007)
With the running of the Eric Greaves 10k road race at Braeside yesterday we have reached the halfway point of the events for this competition and have seen a consolidation by the leaders of their positions. However with the 10 miles and half marathon to come there is still scope for changes in the current order. In the Browne Shield Knox have extended their lead and with the strength of their distance runners will be very hard to peg back. Behind them Collingwood has made up ground on Croydon who are now hanging on to second by a small margin. Other venues like Springvale, Caulfield and Aberfeldie continue to score well but find that missing out on full scores in the opening track run has cost them heavily.
In the Men's individual comp it is still tight at the top with 4 competitors in with a chance though Paul Twining has managed to gain a narrow break with another strong performance. In the Women's section some truly great performances by Theresia Baird, Bronwen Cardy and Lavinia Petrie has made it tough for the other competitors but all have missed one race and with 3 races still to come a lot will depend on who completes the most events.
Of course this year is the first year we have held these events and the committee and venue managers will be reviewing the results and looking at expanding the competitions on offer.
Browne Shield News - including results and individual points competition. (added 25 June 2007)
With the running of the 10k Cross Country event at Collingwood today competiton in the men's individual event is very fierce whilst in the women's section as the 4 competitors from the track run didn't run the cross country this has opened the way for several other competitors to figure in proceedings. In the inter venue Browne Shield, Knox have opened up a handy break on Croydon and Collingwood but one race can change things noticeably. With many more competitors today we can see what a closely fought event this can be as 4 venues were separated by less than a point on aggregate! Our next event is the Eric Greaves 10k at Braeside Park on Sun 15 July at 10.00am. This is one of our most popular events and we should see more tight scoring. Full details are on our website or through Alan Bennie.
In scoring this event I have used the 10k road run factors as obviously there are no cross country factors. This means that the performances are probably a little better than the percentages indicate but as everybody is scored on the same basis then for the purposes of this competition this does not matter.
To help encourage participation by members in VMA distance running events during the winter season a new inter venue competition is to be held. In recognition of the many years of valuable service to VMA given by Dot & Colin Browne a shield bearing their names will be held by the winning venue for 12 months. The rules of the competition are contained in the attached document and we ask all members to support their venue during the season. Even if you are not a competitor you can come along to the event and help with conducting the races and encourage your teammates as well.
In addition to the teams event there will also be trophies awarded to the highest aggregate scoring male and female competitors for the season. All trophies will be presented at the Dinner Dance in November. Progress scores will be published during the season as well as sent to venue managers. As this is a new event we dont kinow in advance how well some of the rules will work so at the completion of the competition the results will be reviewed and modified if required. If successful the concept may be extended to other events but that is someway off at the moment.
Let's make this our best winter season and come together in spirited but friendly competition.
