...Liberal philosophy and policy must come to terms with the many aspirations, rights and needs of individuals in our society. Some will require action by government and some should be left for individual and collective action in the community.

The Liberal Party and its leaders have been remiss in not recording more clearly what they believe in and how those beliefs should be translated into action. For those of you looking for a concise and genuinely Liberal statement I commend Liberal Thinking by Chris Puplick and Sir Robert Southey, Macmillan, 1980. At page 52 the authors state:

"The family has always been a critical factor in the philosophy of Liberalism for a number of reasons. It is the private sphere within which the individual may live most of his life. It is the principal sphere within which the individual's needs for close and supporting relationships are met. It is the primary institution through which the individual learns values and gains an understanding about the world. It is primarily within the family that the individual develops his conception of himself, of his worth, his capacities and his values"
