No 'Victoria in London Week'
Saturday 5th August 2000 saw the unheralded 150th anniversary of the enactment of the UK Imperial Parliament's Australian Colonies Act which created the Colony of Victoria from Port Phillip District of New South Wales.

The 1850 Act is Victoria's equivalent of the Australian Constitution Act 1900 which established the Commonwealth of Australia. This Act established today's Victoria and the sovereignty of its legislative and legal institutions.

VSG's Dr. Tali Leizer presents his precis of the decade of agitation that lead to the landmark 1850 Act that reorganised British administration of Australia.

California Admission Day 2000

California Admission Day 2000 celebrations
Sacramento, 8-10 September

Welcome to Victoria150
Welcome to Victoria150, the Victorian Sesquicentennial Group's website to promote the 150th Anniversary of the Separation of the Port Phillip District from New South Wales as the Colony of Victoria.

Over the next year this State will be celebrating both the Centenary of the Federation of Australia and the Sesquicentennial of Victoria. Major events in both will be highlighted on this website, a production of the private organisation, the Victorian Sesquicentennial Group, hosted by Victoria's own community internet service, VICNET.

Happy 150th Birthday, California
Saturday, 9th September 2000 is the 150th anniversary of the admission of California as the 31st State of the United States. And we will be there!

After 33 months and substantial expenditures the culminating moment in California's sesquicentennial celebrations is about to take place in Sacramento, the State capital, this weekend. This is the California Admission Day celebrations.

This site will provide regular updates over the next fortnight of how the world's eighth largest economy celebrates its sesquicentennial.

Why should Victorians care about a local celebration 14,000 km away?
At first blush it might seem presumptious to compare the second state of Australia (population 4.6 million, gross state product of about $US75 billion) with the first State of the U.S. (34 million and about $1000 billion). And yet over the next fortnight, we will show ample evidence of the close historical bond that existed between Victoria and California 150 years ago, forged by a common gold rush experience.

We will also highlight continuing connections through the large Australian expatriate community in places such as Los Angeles and the Silicon Valley.
