Victoria
Chorale

Victoria
Chorale was founded in October 1993 by Val J Pyers (the
original founder of Melbourne Chorale). He led it until 8 January 2007
and was its first Director and Conductor. The Chorale performs with a
wide range of professional musicians as well as amateur groups. Major
performances have included Verdi's Requiem with the Victorian State
Orchestra conducted by the Chorale's patron at the
time, Claudio Scimone; and the Australian
premiere of Missa O Pulchritudo by Gian Carlo Menotti at BMW Edge as
part of the 2006 Italian festival in Melbourne, conducted by Dr Peter
Tregear the Dean of Trinity College, University of Melbourne .
The
Chorale comprises a group of some 25 to 40 singers (SATB) and aims to
present a diverse choral repertoire from Australia
and overseas. The Choir has a strong commitment to encourage
composers of choral music within
Australia and to perform in rural Victoria as well as Melbourne.
Conductor
and Musical Director
In
2009 Victoria
Chorale is delighted to be singing under the direction of Matthew
Toogood, one of Melbourne's most exciting young
conductors.
He
has conducted the Heidelberg
Choral Society
for two years while completing a Masters of Music specialising in
conducting with John Hopkins OBE. (Also a very talented
pianist
and tenor soloist, Matthew is a very worthy successor to Val
Pyers, the founder of Victoria Chorale.)

We have been very fortunate to have secured Sally-Ann Russell to sing
the role of Solomon and the concert will be an opportunity to hear one
of Australia's great soprano voices.

Victoria Chorale's 2009 ProgramThe
Victoria Chorale's program for 2009 commenced with our Mozart concert which was a combined
concert with Monash University Choral Society (MonUCS).
Our afternoon at the Prom’s concert of British music was
held at Sandybeach, on the 19th July and was very successful.
Again it was conducted by Matthew Toogood (wearing a Union Jack and
what he considered a "funny"hat!) Lot of audience participation was a
feature of this concert which gave everyone an opportunity to let
their hair down and blow hooters and wave flags!. - On Oct 23rd we will be performing one of our major concerts for the year together with the University of Melbourne
Faculty of Music choir and a full orchestral accompaniment . The work we have chosen is Handel's Oratorio "Solomon", and we have been
very fortunate to have secured Sally-Ann Russell to sing the role of
Solomon. The Venue is St. Georges Uniting Church at 4 Chapel Street St
Kilda.
- Our traditional Christmas concert is currently being arranged and there will be an announcement soon
regarding this. We expect the concert to be at St Marks Fitzroy on
Sunday the 13th of December and to be performed in conjunction with the
excellent choir of St Marks Church.
