Victoria Chorale Bulletin

Victoria Chorale Inc. is a member of the Australian National Choral Association

Victoria Chorale was founded in October 1993 by Val J Pyers (the original founder of Melbourne Chorale). He led it until 8 January 2007 and was its first Director and Conductor. The Chorale’s current Conductor is Matthew Toogood.

1st August 2009

This bulletin includes information about our upcoming move and updates other information provided in the bulletin handed out at rehearsals.

Victoria Chorale is on the move on Aug 25th

Our rehearsal venue, Union Memorial Church, is about to be renovated, and from Tues Aug 25th we will be using the Church Hall  around the corner on Elm street for rehearsals.  The church hall is the first building directly facing on to Elm street after the church and its offices, which face onto Curzon St.  The entrance is approximately half way between Curzon St and Union St.

Welcome information and a few requests!

A very big welcome to the everyone joining us for the first time for the Solomon concert, and to people returning to the choir.  It is wonderful to have you sing with us in this exciting concert. We think Victoria Chorale is a pretty special choir and hope you enjoy singing with us. We ask all new members to fill out a membership form, available from our membership secretary, Joan Wanstall.

We really appreciate it if singers, both old and new, let one of the committee members know if they will be unable to attend a rehearsal, especially if you are going to miss a few consecutive rehearsals.  Contact details for committee members are listed at the end of this bulletin.

Music is provided as part of your rehearsal fees, folders are available for $5 from our librarian, Helen Ablett.  Please bring a pencil  to all rehearsals - if you forget one, you can buy one for 50 cents. We also ask that you write out a name tag and wear it each week - it really helps with getting to know everyone and creates the friendly atmosphere we value.

We would be pleased to have a few more singers to join us for this concert, so we can better balance the Melbourne Uni Parkville choir of 70+ singers.  If you know people with musical or choral singing backgrounds who might be interested, especially sopranos, tenors and bass/baritones,  please invite them to join us, hopefully starting rehearsals either Aug 4 or 11.

Arrangements for Solomon: 8pm Fri Oct  23

Venue:St Georges Uniting Church (St Michael’s Performing Arts Centre), 4 Chapel St, St Kilda East.

Dress rehearsal -  Thurs Oct 22, time to be advised.

This is a work for a double-chorus so we are combining with University of Melbourne Parkville Choir, which Matt also conducts – in all, there will be approximately 110 singers .  We sometimes sing Choir 1 and sometimes Choir 2 - there is a clear marking at the start of each chorus to indicate which we are singing.  We are putting together a package of some midi files and other information about the work and will make some CDs available and also email this information to you.

There is a stellar soloist line-up, led by the internationally renowned Sally- Anne Russell, plus RMP Aria winners Robert Macfarlane (tenor) and Nicholas Bradley (bass), and we also anticipate that Louisa Hunter-Bradley (soprano) will be singing with us.

Flyers for the concert are available now so start promoting the concert to friends, neighbours, colleagues and get them to put the date in their diary.

  •  Dress code for women:  Black top with long or elbow length sleeves.  Black skirt or slacks, black stockings and shoes.  Gold jewellery. TBA whether we will wear the choir’s gold scarves.
  • Dress code for men:  Dinner suits, white shirt, black bow tie.

Rehearsal Fees- payable to Joan Wanstall

  • The fee per performance is $65 -$40 conc for FT students, Health and Pension Card holders.
  • Please pay your fees by Aug 4 for Solomon (or by Aug 18th for people singing for the 1st time).

Arrangements for Christmas Concert: 5pm Sun Dec 13, St Marks, 250 George Street, Fitzroy

We hope that many of the people joining us for Solomon will also sing the Christmas Concert with us.

This a  joint concert with the St Mark’s choir, which Janet Gibbs conducts.

Success with Afternoon at the Proms!

The audience loved it, we enjoyed ourselves, and it was a great success financially.  Total income was $2205, expenses approx $650, thus profit around $1550, nearly double the expected $750.

Many thanks to everyone in the choir for making it such a success with good singing, great afternoon tea and raffle donations, helping with set-up and clean-up, flags and decorations and generally entering into the spirit of things.  And even more important – by selling tickets!  We had so many raffle donations that we more than filled the two baskets that were given away on the day and we kept quite a few of the 'keepable'  items to be the start of some baskets we will raffle at Christmas time.

Special thanks go to Sandybeach for donating the venue, Matt for sparkling conducting (literally and figuratively, thanks to the hat), Janet for great accompanying, Ken for making attractive flyers, programs and flags, Judy for concert publicity and overall arrangements for concert, John for lugging his timpani down and playing so well, our terrific soloists – Corry, Joe, Alan and Matt,  Joan Scott and Richenda for making the ‘rosettes’, Helen for great flags (and socks!), Neil Wanstall for fabulous decorating, Harold, Ramona, Mandy, Dominique for doing refreshments, raffles and front of house, Emily for taking photos, Joan W for wrapping raffle baskets, and – with Keith, counting all our money!
